Wound Care
Foot wound care centers on developing a healthy area within the wound for new skin cells to flourish. Ideally, the wound care will result in new skin cells making their way to the wound. In order for a wound to develop new skin, it must be kept moist. The challenge lies in maintaining the optimal level of moisture as there is considerable draining within the interior of the wound, meaning a dressing that is more absorptive might be necessary. Wound care requires the use of specialized ointments, gels and antibiotic ointments at specific times.
Certain wounds are better treated with ointments that are more fibrous. Alternatively, while burn wounds are best treated with such a fibrous substance, different types of ointments are optimal for other foot wounds such as diabetic foot wounds. Regardless of the wound type, once it has been cleansed and the ointment is applied, the wound is wrapped with gauze dressing.
Wound care also involves wound healing through off-loading. Off-loading is a term used to refer to a patient who remains off his or her feet.
